Farming can be a safe and effective way to generate food at the cost of fresh water. It also requires the player to return to the farm about every 36 in-game hours, limiting the exploration activities. Even without rain, dedicated tropical fruit farming will generally return as much fresh water to the player as was consumed during the plant growing process. This is because Quwawa and Kura fruits provide 1 water and 2 food bars upon consumption.
Farm Plot Construction[]
A farm plot is required to grow plants. To create a plot, you must first craft a crude hoe. With it in your inventory (you don't have to be holding it in your hand) you can create a farm plot.
The following farming plots are available for the player to use:
- Wood Farming Plot - Holds 4 water levels
- Plank Farming Plot - Holds 8 water levels
- Corrugated Farming Plot - Holds 8 water levels
When placing, plots can overlap with rocks and vegetation, but not palm trees or player built structures. They can be placed on sand or dirt.
Planting[]
Once the plot has been built, take one of the following plants in hand and mouse over the farm plot. Hold E (on default) to plant.
If the player does not want to keep growing a certain plant, simply use a crude hoe on a used farm plot.
Watering[]
After the crop is planted, it must be watered to grow. A newly constructed plot starts with one water level, but it will evaporate in around 24 in-game hours. You can use one of the water storage items to water up to its maximum capacity, but only if there is a plant in it.
If a plot has its water reduced to zero it will cause the plant to die. Once the water level reaches zero, you can no longer water the plot without first removing the dead crop. However, if it rains while you are within range of the plot, it will replenish the water supply and the crop will eventually be revived.
To water the plot, take a coconut flask, water skin or a clay water bottle in hand (drinkable coconuts cannot be used). Mouse over the plot and hold E to water it. Each serving refills 1 water level of the plot.
Plank and scrap metal farm plots are able hold the most water charges. Rain can fully water the plot.
Harvesting[]
The plant will mature over about 48 in-game hours and produce a single fruit among its leaves. Press E (on default) to collect the fruit. The plant will then commence another growth cycle, allowing continual harvests. The hoe is only needed for plot construction and plant removal, not farm maintenance.
Notes[]
- Spoiled items can be used for planting.
